    You can drink litres of water and still feel dry. Hydration is not about how much you can force down — it is about how much your body can actually hold onto and use. Your kidneys are adjusting water against sodium all day long, which is why minerals matter far more than most people realise.

    You can drink water all day and still get hydration wrong. The missing piece is often the salt that decides how much of it stays.

    Three Things Worth Doing Today

    Start with these three changes. They are simple, inexpensive, and they cover most of what I want you to understand about hydration before we get into the deeper science. If you only want the practical version, this is it. The sections that follow explain why each one works.

    Put a little salt in the water

    Plain water is absorbed perfectly well. The part most people miss is what happens afterward: drink a large glass on its own and your blood dilutes slightly, your kidneys read that as surplus, and a good share of it can be in your bladder within the hour. A pinch of unrefined sea salt, or a few drops of a trace mineral concentrate, slows that exit so more of what you drank is still with you at lunchtime. This is why you can get through two litres and still feel dry.

    Filter what comes out of the tap

    Chlorine is in tap water for a good reason — it is what makes it safe to drink — but it carries a taste, and it reacts with organic matter in the pipes on the way to you. Old plumbing adds lead and copper to that list. A counter-top or under-sink filter deals with all of it for very little money, and the water tastes enough better that you drink more of it without trying. A shower filter is the same idea for the water you stand in.

    Drink a full glass on waking

    You have gone seven or eight hours without a drink, breathing out water the whole time. Your brain is about three-quarters water, so hydration matters to how you think, feel and function. My rule is simple: before coffee, before food, before your phone. Warm water, the juice of half a lemon, and a pinch of sea salt. That is the Morning Fire recipe, and it is one of the easiest habits in this module to keep.

    The Science

    Where the Water Actually Goes

    A glass of water starts moving into your bloodstream within minutes. From there, water moves throughout the body by osmosis, following concentration gradients across the intestinal wall and passing through cell membranes via aquaporins — tiny channels built specifically to move water. Your body is very good at getting water where it needs to go.

    The real variable is what happens next. Your body keeps blood sodium inside a remarkably narrow range, and your kidneys are constantly adjusting water around it. Drink a litre of plain water quickly and that concentration drops; your kidneys respond by sending more water to the bladder. Add some minerals, drink it alongside food, or simply spread your intake across the day, and the equation changes. The number on your bottle tells you what you drank. It does not tell you what you retained. Hydration is not a volume contest.

    Absorption
    Water is absorbed through the gut and distributed throughout the body, moving across cell membranes through specialized channels called aquaporins.
    Retention
    Your kidneys continually adjust water and electrolyte balance. Sodium, food, activity, temperature and how quickly you drink all influence how much fluid you retain versus release.
    What goes missing
    Sweat takes salt out with the water. Heat, hard training, coffee and alcohol all widen the gap between what you drink and what you hold.

    This is why chronic mild dehydration can be surprisingly easy to miss. You are losing water all day through breathing and sweating, often more than you notice, and you are losing salt along with it. If those losses keep running ahead of what you replace, the signs can be subtle: afternoon tiredness, a dull head, dry skin or stiff joints — symptoms that are easy to blame on something else first.

    The Minerals

    What the Minerals Are For

    Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge once dissolved. They help your body regulate how much water to hold, and they are also fundamental to nerve signaling, muscle contraction and energy production. Four are especially useful to understand.

    Sodium
    Blood sodium is one of the key signals your kidneys use to decide whether to keep water or release it, and sodium is also the mineral you lose most of in sweat. Unrefined sea salt, Celtic salt and Baja Gold bring small amounts of other minerals along with the sodium; table salt is stripped back to sodium and chloride alone.
    Potassium
    Potassium works alongside sodium across the cell membrane, helping maintain the electrical gradient that nerve signals, muscle contraction and energy production all depend on. Most people eat less of it than they should — avocados, coconut water and leafy greens are some of the easiest sources.
    Magnesium
    Magnesium is involved in more than three hundred enzyme reactions, including reactions involved in energy production and nervous-system regulation. Stress, caffeine and hard exercise all draw it down. If you supplement one mineral, make it this one — magnesium glycinate is the form that absorbs best and is kindest to the gut.
    Trace minerals
    Zinc, selenium, copper, manganese and chromium are needed in tiny quantities and matter anyway. A varied diet covers most people. Unrefined salt and trace mineral concentrates are a simple way to close the gap if yours is narrow — a few drops in a bottle, not a regime.

    Hydrogen water deserves its own category because the hydration part is still ordinary water; the additional interest is the molecular hydrogen dissolved into it. It hydrates you the same way any water does. What makes it different is what the hydrogen does once it is inside the body, which is why it has its own module later in the Workshop.

    Structured Water — The Fourth Phase

    Beyond minerals and filtering, there is another area of water research I find fascinating: structure. Gerald Pollack, a bioengineer at the University of Washington, describes what he calls exclusion-zone water — a fourth phase, denser and more ordered than ordinary liquid water, that forms wherever water meets a surface. In his model, that includes the surfaces inside your cells, which would make structured water what the inside of a healthy cell actually looks like.

    This is where water gets genuinely weird — and where I stay curious rather than pretending the science is settled. It is still a young area of research, but it opens up some interesting questions about how water behaves in biological systems. The practices below are simple ways people experiment with structuring water at home — all free or close to it.

    Sunlight
    Infrared light is what builds exclusion-zone water at a surface in Pollack's work. Water left in the sun for a few hours is the simplest version of the idea, and it costs nothing to try.
    Vortexing
    Stirring water into a spiral, the way it moves in a stream rather than a pipe. Give the glass a vigorous stir before you drink it.
    Copper vessels
    Storing water in copper is an Ayurvedic practice, and copper has a documented antimicrobial effect on water stored in it. The structuring idea comes from the older tradition. Store water overnight and drink it in the morning.
    Lemon and minerals
    Adding lemon juice and sea salt puts water closer to the mineral mix your cells hold it in. The Morning Fire recipe does exactly this, and it earns its place on the mineral argument alone.
    Hydrogen water
    Molecular hydrogen is argued to reduce wear and tear at cell level, and the membranes water crosses are part of what that protects. Its own module covers the case properly.
    Spring and mountain sources
    Natural spring water has moved through rock before emerging at the surface, and it is the kind of water humans drank for most of our history. If you want a natural reference point for the whole structured-water conversation, this is it.

    Keep going before breaking the fast. If you are using hydrogen water, drink it rather than leave it standing — dissolved hydrogen escapes into the air once the bottle is open, so a capped bottle keeps it and an open glass does not.

    Start training well hydrated rather than trying to catch up once you are already sweating. Add salt if you sweat heavily or train in the heat.

    The old advice that drinking water with meals automatically dilutes stomach acid does not hold up. Water with food is absorbed more steadily than water on an empty stomach, so meals can actually be a useful time to drink it.

    That mid-afternoon flatness is often a hydration and salt gap. Try mineralised water and a spoon of raw honey before automatically reaching for another coffee. A coffee at three can still be working in your system at eight.

    Front-load the day. Large volumes late will wake you, and broken sleep costs more than the water was worth. A small glass an hour or two before bed is plenty.

    You do not need to turn hydration into a six-step project. If you want to keep it simple, start with a mineralised glass on waking and pay attention to that afternoon moment when you would normally reach for caffeine. Get those two habits right first. The rest can be layered in if it genuinely helps your day.

    The Older Habit
    Adding salt to water is hardly a modern biohack. Hot-climate traditions arrived at their own versions of it — salted lassi, switchel, salt in lemon water — centuries before anyone could measure what blood sodium was doing.

    Get the fundamentals right first: good water, enough minerals, and most of your hydration earlier in the day. You can get very sophisticated after that. But those three will do most of the heavy lifting.
