You can drink litres of water and still feel dry. Hydration is not about how much you can force down — it is about how much your body can actually hold onto and use. Your kidneys are adjusting water against sodium all day long, which is why minerals matter far more than most people realise.
Hydration Is More Than Drinking More Water
Have you ever finished a huge bottle of water, spent the next hour going to the bathroom, and still not felt particularly hydrated?
Hydration is more than simply drinking as much water as possible. Your body is constantly balancing water with sodium and other electrolytes, while losing both through breathing, sweat, exercise, heat and everyday life. What you drink matters, but so do what is in the water, what you have lost, and when you drink it.
This module is about making that simpler: how water moves through the body, what minerals actually do, which water is worth drinking, and how to build a hydration routine that supports your day without turning it into another full-time wellness project.
Three Things Worth Doing Today
Start with these three changes. They are simple, inexpensive, and they cover most of what I want you to understand about hydration before we get into the deeper science. If you only want the practical version, this is it. The sections that follow explain why each one works.
Put a little salt in the water
Plain water is absorbed perfectly well. The part most people miss is what happens afterward: drink a large glass on its own and your blood dilutes slightly, your kidneys read that as surplus, and a good share of it can be in your bladder within the hour. A pinch of unrefined sea salt, or a few drops of a trace mineral concentrate, slows that exit so more of what you drank is still with you at lunchtime. This is why you can get through two litres and still feel dry.
Filter what comes out of the tap
Different filters remove different things, so the right system depends on the water where you live and what you want to reduce. A good carbon filter can improve taste and reduce chlorine and certain organic compounds. If you want broader contaminant reduction, reverse osmosis or distillation takes the process further. The important part is choosing a system based on what it has actually been tested or certified to remove — not simply how many “stages” are printed on the box.
Drink a full glass on waking
You have gone seven or eight hours without a drink, breathing out water the whole time. Your brain is about three-quarters water, so hydration matters to how you think, feel and function. My rule is simple: before coffee, before food, before your phone. Warm water, the juice of half a lemon, and a pinch of sea salt. That is the Morning Fire recipe, and it is one of the easiest habits in this module to keep.
Where the Water Actually Goes
Water is absorbed remarkably well on its own. After you drink it, water moves across the intestine into the bloodstream and then continuously between the blood and cells. Aquaporins — tiny channels in cell membranes — help water move where it needs to go. Getting water into the body is generally the easy part.
Your kidneys then continuously adjust water and sodium to keep the concentration of your blood within a narrow range. If you drink a large amount of plain water quickly, some may simply be excreted as your body restores that balance. Sodium and other electrolytes become especially relevant when you are also losing them through sweat, heat, exercise or other significant fluid loss.
This is why chronic mild dehydration can be surprisingly easy to miss. You are losing water all day through breathing and sweating, often more than you notice, and you are losing salt along with it. If those losses keep running ahead of what you replace, possible signs can be subtle: afternoon tiredness, a dull head, dry skin or stiff joints — symptoms that are easy to blame on something else first.
What the Minerals Are For
Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge once dissolved. They help your body regulate how much water to hold, and they are also fundamental to nerve signaling, muscle contraction and energy production. Four are especially useful to understand.
Not All Water Is Equal
Not all filters are doing the same job. A basic carbon filter can improve taste and reduce chlorine and certain organic compounds, but if I were building a water system today and wanted broad contaminant reduction, I would go further. The goal isn’t simply to make water taste cleaner. It is to remove as much of what you don’t want as reasonably possible, then put back the minerals you actually do.
If You Want to Upgrade Your Water
My first choice for most homes is a high-quality reverse-osmosis system with carbon filtration before the membrane and remineralization afterward. The carbon stage handles contaminants it is particularly good at reducing, while reverse osmosis can remove a much wider range of dissolved substances, including many metals, salts and other contaminants. Remineralization afterward improves the taste and adds minerals back into water that has deliberately been stripped down.
For someone who wants to go even further, distillation followed by remineralization is another excellent option. A distiller boils the water and collects the condensed vapor, leaving behind many dissolved minerals, metals, salts, microorganisms and other contaminants. In practical terms, you are starting with extremely stripped-down water and then deciding what you want to put back into it.
I prefer to remineralize both RO and distilled water rather than making ultra-purified water the end goal. That can be done with a quality remineralization cartridge, mineral drops or an appropriate mineral concentrate depending on the system and your needs.
If using distillation, I would ideally pair it with activated-carbon post-filtration as well, because some volatile compounds are better handled by carbon than distillation alone.
The part I pay attention to isn’t how many “stages” a company advertises. Look at what the exact system has actually been independently tested or certified to reduce. NSF/ANSI 53 and 58 cover important health-related contaminant and reverse-osmosis claims, while NSF/ANSI 401 addresses a group of newer contaminants including certain pharmaceutical residues, pesticides and endocrine-active compounds.
If PFAS are one of your concerns, look specifically for a PFAS-reduction claim, not simply the words “NSF certified.”
And one thing I don’t use as my definition of clean water: TDS alone. A TDS meter tells you how many dissolved solids are present. It cannot tell you whether those solids are calcium and magnesium or something you would rather not be drinking.
Remove what you don’t want. Put back what you do.
Hydrogen water belongs in a different category because it is not a filtration method. The hydration part is still ordinary water; molecular hydrogen is simply dissolved into whatever water you start with. I would begin with good-quality filtered, RO, distilled or spring water first, then consider hydrogen as an additional layer. It has its own module later in the Workshop.
Structured Water — An Interesting but Unsettled Area
Beyond filtration and minerals, there is another area of water research I find fascinating: how water behaves when it meets biological surfaces. Gerald Pollack, a bioengineer at the University of Washington, has studied what he calls exclusion-zone water — a more ordered region of water that forms next to certain surfaces and can expand in response to infrared energy.
The phenomenon itself is interesting; what it ultimately means for human health and hydration is much less settled. I include it because it is an area I continue to follow, not because I think you need “structured water” in order to be hydrated. If you enjoy experimenting at the edges of wellness research, however, this is one of those rabbit holes worth knowing exists.
The ritual was inspired by the work of Japanese researcher Masaru Emoto, who became known for photographing ice crystals formed from water exposed to different words, music and intentions. Later blinded experiments investigating the idea reported differences in how independently rated crystals from intention-treated water were judged, although this remains an unusual and unsettled area of research rather than established science.
Do I think you need to do this to hydrate properly? Absolutely not.
But there is something I love about ending the very technical process of filtering, remineralizing, getting the chemistry right — with thirty seconds of sound, attention and gratitude.
A Hydration Routine You Can Actually Keep
This is my personal morning routine: warm filtered water, lemon, a little apple cider vinegar and, depending on my diet, the heat and what I am doing that day, a pinch of sea salt. Lemon and apple cider vinegar are part of the ritual because I enjoy them — you do not need either one for water to hydrate you.
The habit that matters most is simpler: drink something before the day gets away from you.
You do not need to walk around forcing down water all day. Drink regularly, drink with meals if you want to, and pay attention to thirst, activity, climate and what your body is telling you. Trying to make up an entire day’s hydration by suddenly drinking enormous quantities at once is rarely the most comfortable way to do it.
If you hit an afternoon slump, check the basics before automatically reaching for another coffee: have you eaten, had enough water, and replaced electrolytes if you have been sweating or out in the heat?
If you are sweating heavily, exercising hard, spending hours in the heat, using a sauna or otherwise losing substantial fluid, you are losing electrolytes along with water. Those are the days when mineralised water or a proper electrolyte drink becomes much more useful than simply pouring in more plain water.
I prefer to drink most of my water earlier in the day and taper naturally into the evening. Drink if you are thirsty, but there is little benefit in suddenly drinking a huge bottle before bed if the result is waking up repeatedly to use the bathroom. Good hydration should support good sleep, not compete with it.
You do not need to turn hydration into a project. Get your water quality right, drink consistently, replace electrolytes when you are actually losing them, and build a morning habit you will keep. Everything beyond that is refinement.
